On this past weekend’s show we had a special segment from our friend, DJ, producer, and tastemaker Karen P from London. She has been putting on an amazing live series called Broad Casting. The Broad Casting event juxtaposes artists and genres in ways you would never think would work. Artists such as Buraka Som Sistema to Tony Allen to Hypnotic Brass Ensemble to Jimi Tenor to Mulatu Astatke have performed.

Mr. Oizo, “$tunt$ (Flying Lotus Remix)”

A Mr. Oizo track pulled through Flying Lotus’ crazy brain — should be totally otherworldly, right? Interestingly, it’s much tamer than I would have expected. Perhaps it’s because this remix was done a couple years ago, before Flying Lotus gained the unbelievable amount of momentum he’s got now. Still, you can hear the seeds in there.

Out the gate, he slows down the neon-legging-speed synth line to a deliberate grind. It’s real sticky. In fact, he somehow out-Bangers Ed Banger for the first two thirds of the track. Then, for the final minute, he flexes the muscles we’ve come to know. The melody turns liquid and the beat starts to wobble just enough. An interesting record for the genealogy and the tune.
