(My first post on the very respectable needledrop.net and I pick some raunchy, explicit, campy disco-soul-techno? We’ll see…)

Moodymann. If that name doesn’t mean something to you, he’d understand. So inexplicable, so original, and nearly always on point — nobody does it like Kenny Dixon Jr. Try to describe one of his productions and all sorts of adjectives will come to mind, but none seem quite right. His tracks have a certain idiosyncratic touch, something complete but almost secret. Maybe it’s Detroit? Maybe it’s the drugs? Maybe he just doesn’t listen to anybody else’s music?

Regardless, he’s holding it down in Detroit and making dance music as well or better than anybody in the world. He gets it by doing whatever he wants. He’ll frustrate you for an entire track and then throw in a kick drum for a couple bars, just to pull it out until you lose your mind. And you love it. He’ll lock into a groove that barely budges for the length of the track. And you never want it to stop. Damn.

So, at the tale end of 2008, he releases the Det.Riot ’67 EP after every year end list has been put together. Huh. Maybe he doesn’t even have the internet?

In any case, it lives up to the name. The presumed single, “Freeki Mutha F cker,” has an obvious ancestor (in name and mood) in Mike Dunn’s “Phreaky MF,” a track that will make even then nastiest dance floor blush (I saw Cassy play it at Rex Club and even the French kids were a little uncomfortable). Where Mike Dunn goes for shock and awe, Moodymann wants to seep through the cracks and infiltrate. It’s some subtly freaky shit. I’m talking horror film, not scary movie. Biological warfare, not nuclear.

And for whatever reason, it does everything but repulse. That depravity catches you. I won’t overdo the adjectives… there’s that shuttering kick drum, the sinister strings, the unconcerned bass line. This is dance music at its most functional, its most menacing. It strikes completely.
